Wight Box

No, that’s not a typo. I admit that I am prone to them but in this case, nope. Wight Box is latest offering from The Basic Expert.

I admit that I love Swords & Wizardry White Box and White Box: FMAG. While these games clean up and modernize the Three Little Brown Books, Wight Box takes a different direction. Sure there is some clean up but it doesn’t try to modernize the rules instead it relies on Chainmail.

It has many of those rules that have passed by the wayside over the years. Weapon Class; Weapon Vs Armor Type Modifiers and so on. Despite any complaints anyone has about theses types of rules, they were fundamental in the very early days D&D. I like this take on the White Box rules. It keeps close to the original and uses contemporary sources for any “modifications”.

Would a I run it? Sure I could but to be honest I’d go with White Box: FMAG. It doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t use any material from Wight Box. I could meld in those additional combat rules into the game. So I’m glad that I put up a few bucks for the PDF (POD coming soon as of this writing).

So what if you don’t the White Box style of play? Should you give this a look. Yes, you should. This is probably the easiest way for anyone to a good glimpse at what it was like and what people thinking and doing in the early days of hobby. It just might give some folks some insight.
